My Shadow

Posted by teacher on April 8, 2015

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

The funniest things about him is the way he likes to grow-
Not at all like proper children, which is always very slow;
For he sometimes shoots up taller like an India rubber ball,
And he sometimes gets so little that there’s none of him at all.

He hasn’t got a notion of how children ought to play,
And can only make a fool of me in every sort of way.
He stays so close beside me, he’s a coward you can see;
I’d think shame to stick to nursie as that shadow sticks to me!

One morning, very early, before the sun was up,
I rose and found the shining dew on every buttercup;
But my lazy little shadow, like an arrant sleepy-head,
Had stayed at home behind me and was fast asleep in bed.

I open them

I open them, I close them
I put them in the air
I open them, I close them
I put them in my hair
I open them, I close them
I give a little clap
I open them, I close them
I put them in my lap

Passing time

When time is slow
I feel my hair lengthen
I see the paint dry
I watch the hare crawl
I see the seconds pass
When time is slow

Embers

Fiery furnace burning fierce
Leaping, lunging in the air
Crackling, sparking everywhere
Back up, don’t touch, beware!

But wait! For now
The embers form
And glow to keep
The broth so warm

Hidden Talents

Deciding her next move
The maiden grew wary
She knew that she must prove
Her life wasn’t dreary

For truly she’s gallant,
So brave, and so kind, and so true
She’s bursting with talent
There’s nothing that she couldn’t do!

Prepare

Over time I came to see
All the trees in front of me
Tall and wide and lush and green
Deep and dark, the roots unseen

High in the branches the
Squirrels take chances as
Winter draws nearer and
Food is more dearer

Racehorse

A fast-racer
Sure-footed
A hay-eater
Often-mounted
A fence-jumper
Tail flowing
A hoofed-kicker
Gentle snorter

Winter rain

Above my head the cloudy bursting sky
Below my head the earth’s not dry
Inside my head a million thoughts I hold
Outside my head my nose snaps with cold
Around my head winter grips with her icy hands and
On my head the most perfect snowflake lands

The Troll

The tiny, tough goat goes tippy, toppy, tide
Across the bridge to taste the other side
The tall, terrible troll stretches his arms out wide
But the tiny, tough goat makes him step aside

Swans

Six swans swoop slowly
Their sister is silent and sad
For six long years she does not smile
To save these six young lads

Fish

Flounder, flounder, little fish
Give this fisherman his wish
Flap your fins and come find me
For my wife is still unhappy

Mighty Mountains

Mighty men march up the mountains
Up the magic, misty mountains
Magic mountains open up
Move your mist and let me in

I see the sun

I see the sun, and the sun sees me
I see the moon, and the moon sees me
I see my star, and my star sees me
I see you, and you see me

Insect

It’s an insect
Not a spider
It has six legs instead of eight
Three on this side
Three on that side
And it’s crawling on my plate
